In order to maximize your profits playing online poker, you should have rakeback and you should know what method the poker room uses to calculate your rake contributed. Most poker rooms use MGR, which stands for Monthly Gross Revenue and is your net contributed rake for a month (total rake contributed minus deductions). This number is the number used when calculating how much rakeback to refund, usually 27-33% of MGR.
When you enter a tournament with a $10 buy-in and a $1 fee; your MGR increases by $1. When you play ring games, it isn’t as simple. The amount of rake taken from the pot is a percentage of the total pot, usually three to five percent. How much rake you are credited with contributing to each pot depends on the methods used by the poker room.
The three different methods of calculating how much rake each player contributes are dealt, contributed, and weighted contributed method. At poker rooms that use the dealt method, every player that is “dealt” into a hand is credited with contributing rake to the pot. Even if you fold, without actually contributing any money to the pot you are still credited with rake contributed and your MGR increases. To calculate the actual amount of rake that you are credited with, simply divide the amount of rake taken by the number of players dealt into the hand. If there are 10 players dealt into the hand, you are credited with 10% of any rake taken.
For example, if there is $3 in rake taken and 10 players dealt into the hand, then your MGR increases by $0.30. If you are receiving 30% of your rake back, then your rakeback increased by $0.09. Here are a couple of equations that show how to calculate this:
MGR Earned from each hand = (total amt raked) / (# of players dealt in)
Rakeback Earned = MGR * (Rackback % Offered)
The dealt method is the better rakeback method for players who play tighter than the average players at the tables. This is because you will be contributing money to the pot less often, but receiving the exact same amount of rake as everyone else. |
